In your Admin, under Settings > General, what is the "New User Default Role" set to? You should set it to "Subscriber", if it is not. This may alleviate the problem.

After installing the SMTP, it did not start working, but, i decided to try disabling all of my other plugins one by one again just to double check, and I found that the Landing Pages was the culprit....
